We are pleased to invite you to the 29th AGM, which will take place in Milan on 26 and 27 February 2026, in the heart of one of Europe’s most dynamic research hubs. Continuing the tradition of rotating between major Alpine cities (Zurich, Munich, Milan, Innsbruck, Grenoble), the meeting aims to promote open scientific exchange across the glaciological community and to provide an inclusive environment for both established researchers and early career scientists. Participation is strongly encouraged, and conference attendance will remain free of charge.
AGM 29 will focus on the scientific challenges and societal implications associated with the rapid transformation of the Alpine cryosphere. The Alps, hosting thousands of glaciers now undergoing unprecedented retreat, offer a unique natural laboratory for studying climate-induced ice loss, hydrological shifts, and geomorphological instability. Particular attention will be dedicated to the increasing glaciological risk, including glacier shrinkage, lake outburst floods, slope destabilization in permafrost areas, and the cascading hazards affecting Alpine communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems.
A central theme of the meeting will be the footprint of human activity on mountain environments. Presentations will address atmospheric pollution archived in glacier ice, long-range aerosol transport, and the accelerating impact of greenhouse-gas–driven warming on mass balance dynamics. Contributions that integrate field observations, remote sensing, numerical modeling, and paleoclimate records are especially welcome, as they help build a comprehensive understanding of past, present, and future glacier evolution.
As in previous years, participants may contribute via oral presentations and posters. Early career scientists are particularly encouraged to participate.
We look forward to welcoming you to Milan for a stimulating and collaborative meeting dedicated to advancing Alpine glaciology and understanding the profound transformations shaping our high-mountain environments.
Important: each participant must register individually, submitting an abstract is not enough to register. Thank you!
The oral presentations will be slides supported with a 15 minutes length (including discussion). We can accept Microsoft Power Point or Adobe PDF presentations formats.
The poster format should be portrait A0 (81.4 cm x 118.9 cm).
The 2026 conference will be a multi venue conference hosted by both the University of Milano-Bicocca and the University of Milan "La Statale".
The 1st day 26th February the #AGM29 will be hosted in the U1 building of the University Milano - Bicocca in Piazza della Scienza 1, Milan.
The venue is located in the northern part of the city of Milan. The U1 building is the house of both the Department of Environmental and Earth Sciences and of the EuroCold Lab and provide a comfortable and welcoming athmosfere for all participants.
The 2nd day 27th February the #AGM29 will be hosted in the of the University of Milano "La Statale" in via Festa del Perdono 7, Milan. The venue il located downtown and the conference will be hosted in the historic headquarters of the University of Milan, where science, culture, and history blend in perfect harmony.
Airplane: Milan is served by 3 airports: Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, and Bergamo Orio al Serio. There are several transfers and shuttles available to take you to the main train stations or the city center. We recommend booking the shuttle at the same time as your flight ticket to ensure you have a seat.
Train: The main stations in Milan are Central Station and Garibladi Station. Numerous metro lines, suburban trains, and local public transport depart from these stations to reach different areas of the city.
Public transport: For the 1st day he closest station is "Bicocca" on the subway line 5 and it is just a few steps from the U1 building. For the 2nd day, the closest stop is "Sforza Policlinico" on subway line 4.
Milan offers various types of hotel accommodations, some near the University of Milano - Bicocca, others closer to the city center. We recommend booking your stay well in advance to ensure you get the best accommodation at an affordable price.
